A bald eagle flew directly into the path of a Schoharie school bus, striking the windshield and shattering it Monday morning. The bird was killed but no one else was injured.
The accident happened at about 11:05am on I-88 in the Town of Duanesburg while the Schoharie bus was headed westbound near mile marker 109, according to the Princetown State Police.
None of the students on the bus or the driver were injured in the accident, police said.
The bird was located alongside the road dead and an official from the New York State DEC responded to the scene and removed the bird, police added.
The 63-passenger bus was towed from the scene due to the damage to the windshield and the students were transferred to another bus, according to police.
There were 19 students on the bus. The students were checked out by the nurse and there were no injuries.
“The driver did a great job and responded very well as the windshield was severely damaged,” Superintendent David Blanchard said.
